ARTIST BIO

Brad Biederman is most often known for his mural work around the city of London. His work is characteristic for fun characters, bold colours, and fat black outlines. There is a story in every piece. This exposition is a departure in that it is absent of colour; the characters remain, the lines remain, the story is always present. The 24 new works are line drawings that expose his talent; there is no where to hide. You will notice some of his favourite walls and canvases reworked, along side new drawings and soon to be favourite characters. Those who purchase a piece of the 24 on opening night, will be entered into a draw for one of Brad’s previous canvas works. The winner can choose from 10 canvasses ranging in value from $500 to $1000. The potential prizes will also be on display during the show and available for sale after opening night. Each of the new works is priced to find a new home ($200) and limited edition prints will also be available for those who would like to start their collection.

Workshops and showcases are plentiful in June!

June means the end of school for some, but when it comes to dancing and teaching, IAW is more like Can’t stop, Won’t stop! One event is already done, but there’s more to come. Read on and find out what’s in store for this month!

On Sat, June 7 Beacock Library hosted a Free Community Workshop with Ill at Will. The workshop covered some basic hip hop moves and lessons on musicality, freestyle, and the importance of creative expression.

Northeast stays fresh and ILL!

This Sat, June 14 we will be at Our Street London (car free festival on Dundas St.) between 11am – 4pm. We’ll probably be with our O.N.E. fam near the studio (across from the Central Library) and I heard that there might be performances at 1 and 2 pm.

Come enjoy the street festival, food, and various showcases!

Last but certainly not least is the ONE Movement 2nd Annual Hip Hop Dance Showcase on Fri, June 20 at Wolf Performance Hall (Central Library).

This event celebrates the completion of TWO YEARS of O.N.E. and features competition between some of London’s finest dance crews and solo dancers:

#HBK .. One Up Dance Crew .. HDMI .. ONEsies .. Space Invaderz .. Ill at Will .. Airborne Precautions .. & more ..

If you’re interested in entering YOUR crew to compete, come by the studio (236 Dundas Street) to audition your piece Monday night at 8:30!

This year we are adding another element to the show, one on one all-style battles! Ten spots are available, sign up on our Facebook page. These ten will be battling each other Thursday night, and the top four will be going head to head onstage during the showcase.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Jim or Mike if you have any questions or want to get involved.

ONE Movement receives grant from London Life & United Way

Congratulations to ONE Movement for being awarded the spring 2014 London Life Youth United grant for their ONE Movement Hip Hop Project!

After-school dance workshops led by ONE Movement volunteers at the Boys & Girls Club of London offer local youth the chance to experience, learn, and grow through artistic expression. Developing new skills and confidence, participants of the workshops work towards a final performance at the 2nd Annual ONE Movement Hip Hop Dance Showcase taking place in June 2014.

This should turn out to be a great example of the positive influence hip hop can have. So once again, biggups to everyone involved in bringing this after school dance program to the kids, especially ill at will’s own JFX, Bambino, and Nikolaas! A big thanks definitely goes to Mike from O.N.E. Dance Studio as well.

Proving once again that Ill at Will is for the children.

Kanye West Curtis Mayfield Sample Moment on #MusicMonday

Curtis Mayfield Kanye West

Recently I was enjoying some funk & soul classics when Curtis Mayfield inevitably came up.

The former lead singer of The Impressions is known for a number of hits, with the group and as a solo artist, but there’s one song that even those unfamiliar with Curtis Mayfield have probably heard before.

Curtis Mayfield – Move On Up

The prominent horns from Move On Up were sampled by Kanye West for his 2006 single Touch the Sky, which also features a radio debut by rapper Lupe Fiasco.

Mayfield is truly one of the greats, a pioneer in funk/soul and socially conscious R&B. He’s a double inductee into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; inducted as a member of The Impressions in 1991, and again in 1999 as a solo artist.

Kanye is known for sampling his fair share of soul records in his earlier production days, so even though Touch the Sky was produced by Just Blaze it’s no surprise to hear this classic melody on a Mr. West track.

Hip Hop Workshop & Showcase this Saturday

Join my crew and I this weekend at O.N.E. Dance Studio for “Through the Elements” Hip Hop Workshop and Showcase!

So often hip hop events are under self-imposed segregation, with each element doing its own thing independent of the others. But this weekend we’re bringing all the elements together under ONE roof!

It’s a great way to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club of London and enjoy some of what the local hip hop scene has to offer. Whether you’re already active in one of the hip hop art forms or just like to watch and appreciate, Through the Elements will have something fun for you.

Check out the details below and plan to join us on Saturday!
